I thought that I would write a blog on my Rhinoplasty experience so that people who have still to go through the procedure have an idea on what is ahead of them.

Pre-Op nose

I used to have, as I would call it, the “Wallace” nose, my family on my mum’s side all have it and we get it from my papa. I was fine with it until I was about 15 and that’s when the obsession started! I wasn’t bullied or anything like that, I just generally hated my profile view as it was just simply too big for my face as I have quite small features. Anyways when I turned 19 I simply had enough of being paranoid about what angles to sit at in photos or when I went to the cinema or changing room in a shop and would look in the 3 way mirrors it would put a dampener on my day!!

Booking the Op

It was pretty spontaneous, I didn’t have the cash readily available and tbh I hadn’t done any research on the procedure but I entered my details into the transform website as the consultation was free anyways and transform was stuck in my head from seeing it in magazines etc.

First Consultation

I met up with the patient co-ordinator and she basically just went through the whole Rhinoplasty procedure then gave me a costing. I then arranged to see the surgeon that she had offered ( I had no clue at the time that Rhinoplasty is a very complicated procedure and I really should have went with a rhinoplasty specialist!)

Second Consultation

I met with Mr Kuna at the Transform office in Glasgow and he was very nice…didn’t really speak much but he was very smiley! He drew my nose and basically told me what he could do with it, he then showed me some pictures of similar noses that he had done and I was sold as the pictures were really good! (I had already arranged the funds with the bank so I paid the deposit!)

Pre-op Check up

I was terrified as I have a fear of needles and I thought I was going to be getting blood taken but luckily enough she just asked me loads of questions, took my blood pressure and just pricked my finger for some test that I can’t remember :S !

Day of Op!

I got a great sleep! I had to get up about half 5 because I was to be at the hospital for 7 and it’s an hours drive away.  I was so tired that when I got the the hospital I wasn’t nervous at all because I was so sleepy lol !! The hospital staff were fabulous I really felt so looked after and individual due to the care, I couldn’t fault them in any way! It didn’t look like a hospital either, more like a hotel.  Loads of people came into see me after that (Mr Kuna, anaesthesiologist, nurses etc) and I got changed into my wonderful gown and surgical stockings! Then it was time to go! One of the nurses that was wheeling me down to theatre was telling me about how she had rhinoplasty last year and how it was the best decision she had ever made which made me feel really at ease!! Plus her nose was really cute J Strangely enough my biggest fear about the whole thing was about putting the IV in because I have a bit of a fear about needles but tbh I didn’t really feel it ! I think it was because there were so many people around me asking me things, holding my hand, bustling around that I didn’t even notice!! I then continued into a fit of giggles as I was going under.

Just after op

Coming out of the anaesthetic was quite horrific, I couldn’t breath properly and think I took a mild panic attack, the nurse put one of those wee masks on me (gas an air?) then I was out again and remember waking up in my lovely wee room feeling VERY disorientated with a heavy pain on my face, but I was really out of it so tbh It was just a heavy throbbing!  About 15 mins later I was sick a couple of times but I think it was just getting up all the blood I had swallowed! Again I was out of it while I was being sick so it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be!! I had no pain whatsoever with it and all the staff kept asking if I wanted pain pills, and I was like “am I meant to be in pain here?” Lol! My mum came up to visit and brought me some gums which weirdly I could chew, it did feel like my nose was getting pulled down thou but no pain!

Day after Op

I had a bit of a rough night, didn’t really sleep at all and had a temperature so the nurses were in quite a lot. I got my packing took out about an hour before I left the hospital and that was pretty uncomfortable! I think I just about damaged the nurse’s hand by squeezing it!!

Day 3

This was my worst day in regards to swelling and sickness, I was sick the whole morning until I had to get my mum to get me some anti-sickness tablets. I couldn’t really see that well because my eyes had swollen shut pretty much!!! After day 3 I was much better and the bruising and swelling went away by about the 5th day!!!

Cast off!!

I was horrified! I looked like an alien! (Like those things from the movie avatar) I really didn’t know what to think of it, I looked weird!! Over the next week or so the swelling began to decrease around the eyes and I started to look a lot better!!! Also I did abit of shading with makeup so it didn’t look too bad with make-up on!!!

5 weeks post op

The swelling has went right down and I am really happy, the front view hasn’t changed that much, just abit more refined than it was and the side is nice and small with a slight scoop which is what I wanted ! I just wonder if there’s still a lot of swelling and I hope it doesn’t start to go too small!!! Will update in another month or two!!!
